CBN grinding wheel process characteristics

Hardness of CBN is higher than ordinary abrasive.  High hardness means stronger and sharper cutting power.  CBN has high wear resistance, meaning it is more difficult to wear than ordinary abrasive.  The ability to maintain the shape of the abrasive particles is one of the main characteristics of CBN as a high-performance abrasive. The high compressive strength of CBN means that it can keep the particles intact and not break when used in harsh conditions.  CBN has good thermal conductivity and can achieve cold cutting when grinding.  


1. High hardness, high toughness, high hardness and high toughness.

Cubic boron nitride (CBN) is a superhard material whose hardness is second only to diamond. It is much higher than ordinary corundum and silicon carbide abrasive, so it has better cutting ability and sharper.  

2. High temperature resistance, good thermal stability

CBN can withstand the high temperature of 1250-1350 degrees Celsius, than the heat resistance of diamond 800 degrees Celsius higher;  In grinding and cutting iron materials, there will be no chip phenomenon, in grinding hardened steel, high vanadium high speed steel, aluminum high speed steel and other metal materials which are sensitive to grinding temperature is the most ideal grinding wheel.  

3.  Chemically inert strong

CBN is not easy to produce chemical reaction with iron group elements, so for a variety of high speed steel, tool steel, die steel, high alloy hardening steel, chromium steel, nickel alloy, powder metallurgy steel and superalloy grinding high temperature, high hardness, low heat conductivity of the material is very suitable.  

4. Good thermal conductivity

CBN thermal conductivity can reach dozens to 100 times of corundum grinding wheel, so the grinding heat can be quickly derived and the thermal deformation of the workpiece can be reduced.  It is suitable for grinding materials with low heat conductivity.  All kinds of spraying (welding) materials: nickel base, iron base, etc.  Wear-resistant cast iron materials: vanadium - titanium cast iron, high phosphorus cast iron, cold cast iron, etc.  Titanium alloy: such as TC4, etc.  

5. Good grinding performance, good surface quality processing

Because the cubic boron nitride grinding tool can maintain the sharpness of the micro edge of the abrasive particle for a long time, the processing accuracy and surface roughness of the workpiece are processed to achieve a relatively ideal effect, so the workpiece durability can be improved by 10%-30%.  So even if the batch processing of the workpiece, it will always get higher shape, accuracy and consistency.  CBN grinding wheel can obtain high dimensional accuracy and low surface roughness, machining surface is not easy to crack and burn, small residual stress.  Machining surface quality is improved, generally no crack, not easy to burn, and can obtain residual compressive stress, significantly improve the fatigue strength of the workpiece, usually, the durability of the workpiece can be increased by 30-50%.  

6. Strong wear resistance and long service life

The grinding ratio of CBN grinding wheel can reach 3500-5500, which is one hundred times higher than ordinary corundum grinding wheel and 3-5 times higher than diamond grinding wheel.  

7. Environmental protection, no pollution, energy saving and consumption reduction without too much powder dust.  

8. High working efficiency, good comprehensive economic benefits, sharp grinding, small grinding force, long dressing cycle of CBN wheel, less dressing amount and long replacement time.

Long service cycle, high grinding ratio, good economy, good shape retention in use, no need to change and dressing the grinding wheel frequently, save time, improve working conditions, and facilitate the processing operation.  Cubic boron nitride is not suitable for grinding hard alloys and non-metallic hard materials.  At high grinding temperature, chemical reactions will occur when CBN meets alkaline aqueous solution. CBN grinding wheel will decompose in alkaline solution at 300℃, and can decompose in boiling water in trace amounts. As a result, the grain shape of the grinding grain will be destroyed.
