TSP (Thermally Stable Polycrystalline Diamond) is a kind of superhard material sintered with diamond particles and inert binder under high temperature and ultra-high pressure conditions. It has a heat resistance temperature of up to about 1200℃, combining excellent wear resistance and thermal stability. It is a core consumable in petroleum drilling, geological exploration, high-end cutting and other fields. According to the differences in structure and coating technology, TSP is divided into two categories: standard TSP and nickel-based coated TSP. Due to different design positioning, the two form a distinct complementary relationship in performance characteristics, applicable working conditions and application scenarios.

Adopting an inert binder formula, standard TSP avoids residual metal catalytic phases during the sintering process, with tightly bonded diamond particles, achieving top-level thermal stability and wear resistance. It features a uniform and dense structure, ultra-high wear ratio and strong thermal shock resistance, with slow performance attenuation in long-term high-temperature and strong abrasive environments. However, it has low bending strength and poor welding adaptability, limited resistance to lateral impact and high-frequency vibration, and is prone to cracking and falling off due to stress concentration during installation.

It focuses on stable working conditions with extremely high friction, high heat, heavy load and uniform impact force. Its core advantages lie in long-term wear resistance and high temperature resistance, rather than high-strength vibration resistance and firm installation performance.
Petroleum and geological drill bits: Serving as gauge protection teeth and main cutting teeth, it is used for drilling high-hardness and strongly abrasive formations such as sandstone, granite and dense limestone, resisting continuous high temperature and abrasive wear generated by high-speed rotation of drill bits.
Wire drawing dies: Applied to the drawing processing of high-hardness metal wires including steel wires and tungsten wires. It extends the service life of dies and ensures wire precision with an ultra-low friction coefficient and excellent wear resistance.
Grinding wheel dressing tools: Used for precision dressing of diamond wheels and CBN wheels, which can efficiently remove the passivation layer on the wheel surface and maintain the sharpness and geometric accuracy of grinding wheels.

Nickel-based coated TSP is an upgraded product modified by nickel-based coating on the basis of standard TSP. The nickel-based coating has high ductility, strong adhesion and good wettability, which can significantly improve the bending strength, impact toughness and welding adaptability of TSP. The coating can buffer lateral cutting force and high-frequency vibration, disperse installation stress and prevent TSP cracking. Meanwhile, it enhances the bonding force with cemented carbide substrates and brazing materials, solving the pain points of difficult fixation and easy falling off of standard TSP. Limited by the heat resistance of nickel-based coating, it has a slightly lower ultimate heat resistance temperature than standard TSP, with slightly weaker wear resistance in long-term extreme high-temperature environments.

It is specially designed for complex working conditions requiring high-strength firm installation, large lateral cutting force and high-frequency vibration. It is oriented to stable installation, impact and vibration resistance, adapting to operating environments with alternating soft and hard strata and fluctuating working conditions.
Directional drilling tools: Suitable for brazed or mechanically fixed directional drill bits and while-drilling reamers, adapting to soft to medium-hard complex interbedded formations such as mudstone-sandstone interbedded layers and fractured zones, and resisting lateral impact and vibration during drilling.
High-performance cutting tools: Applied to milling and boring processing of difficult-to-machine materials such as superalloys and titanium alloys. It can bear impact load generated by intermittent cutting to ensure firm tool installation and stable cutting performance.
Precision dressing blocks: Used for dressing complex profile grinding wheels and forming abrasives, adapting to dressing scenarios with multi-directional stress and frequent vibration, and avoiding damage and displacement of dressing blocks.

Standard TSP and nickel-based coated TSP are not substitutive but working condition-oriented complementary products. Standard TSP features outstanding wear resistance, which is suitable for scenarios requiring extreme service life under stable strong abrasion and high-temperature conditions. Nickel-based coated TSP excels in impact and vibration resistance, ideal for complex working conditions with high installation difficulty, intense impact and vibration.
Product selection should be based on core working conditions. Standard TSP is preferred for stable heavy-duty scenarios such as high-hardness strata drilling and metal wire drawing. Nickel-based coated TSP is the optimal choice for complex working conditions including directional drilling and difficult-to-machine material cutting.
With tungsten carbide prices soaring 200%+, PCD & CBN become cost-effective alternatives. Moresuperhard provides high-quality PCD/CBN blanks, grinding wheels & grinders to help manufacturers reduce costs and improve efficiency.
